Request an estimateDo I need a vapor barrier in my crawl space?
A crawl space vapor barrier in Fort Worth is a heavy liner laid over the ground under your house to slow the moisture coming up from the dirt. A fuller job also closes the vents so the crawl space stays sealed, insulated and dry. If you've got damp wood, a musty smell or cold floors, it's usually the place to start.
Most people call us about a smell, cold floors or a power bill that keeps climbing, and the crawl space turns out to be part of it. Apex Fort Worth Spray Foam Insulation is based in Fort Worth and works in many of the cities around it. On these jobs the price mostly comes down to the square footage, whether you want a liner on the ground alone or a fully closed crawl space with crawl space insulation on the walls, and what has to be fixed before anything goes down. The schedule turns on that same list, because a leaking pipe, standing water or an appliance that needs a new air supply all come before the liner. I give you your own figure at the estimate, once I've been down there.
How we put in a crawl space vapor barrier
I start by crawling the space with a light and looking at the ground, the vents, the floor framing, any wet spots, the wiring and anything down there that burns fuel. The big choice is a liner on the ground alone or a fully closed crawl space, and I walk you through what each one leaves you with before you pick. If a water heater or furnace gets its air through the vents, that gets handled before anything closes. Then our crew clears out debris and old torn plastic, lays the new liner over the dirt with the seams overlapped and taped, and on a closed job runs it up the walls and seals the vents so outside air stops feeding the space. Before we leave I show you what we did, so you know what's under your floor.
A crawl space liner is one kind of vapor barrier installation, and we handle moisture in other parts of the house the same way. Air also moves up through a house, so if the upstairs runs hot or drafty, attic air sealing closes the gaps at the top that pull air up from below.
Crawl space vapor barrier work under Fort Worth houses
Closing the vents is work done under the city's residential code. Fort Worth uses the International Residential Code with its own changes, and crawl space work in homes here follows that amended city code. Whether your job needs a permit isn't something I'd guess at, so before work starts we check with the city's building office about what it needs and take care of any permit and inspection on our end.
A lot of the older houses we see here sit on pier-and-beam foundations, often with old plastic bunched in the corners and ductwork running under the floor. We see the same houses on jobs in Haltom City and North Richland Hills, so we come ready to crawl and check the vents first.
Why call us for crawl spaces
I give the estimate myself
I come out to look at your crawl space and give the estimate, and I run the work alongside our install crew. So the person who saw the problem is the one making sure it gets handled.
Leaks and problems found first
I learned insulation on a Fort Worth crew and started this business in 2020, and what we're known for is the prep. A liner over a leaking pipe or soaked wood won't do much for you, so I'll tell you what needs fixing first, even when that's someone else's job.
Licensed and insured under your floor
We're fully licensed and insured. That counts in a crawl space, where the work happens around gas appliances, ductwork and wiring.

Frequently asked questions
Is a vapor barrier on the ground enough, or should I close my crawl space vents?
A liner alone helps, but a fully closed crawl space usually keeps the wood drier. In a North Carolina study, closed crawl spaces fed with the home's conditioned air kept summer wood moisture low enough to discourage mold and termites, while vented ones with the same liner saw humidity swing widely. Closed crawl spaces were also found to cut heating and cooling energy use while lowering humidity, so when a house can be closed safely, that's the way I usually lean.
What causes moisture in a vented crawl space?
Usually the outside air coming in through the vents. Research found vented crawl spaces in mixed or hot-humid climates tend to get wetter, because outside air is often more moist, and that moisture condenses on the cooler floor framing and leads to wood damage, mold and pests. Standing water from a leaking pipe or groundwater makes it worse.
Is it safe to close crawl space vents with a gas furnace or water heater down there?
Not until that equipment has another safe air supply. Sealing only the vents can raise moisture, and it can turn deadly when an appliance that burns fuel and relies on natural ventilation sits in the crawl space. If yours draws air from the vents, plan to budget for an upgrade, a replacement or a change to how it gets air, which is why it's one of the first things I check.
Can crawl space moisture affect the air in my house?
Yes. When a crawl space holds a lot of moisture, the house above is likely to have high mold counts in the living space too. Air from under the floor works its way up through gaps around pipes and wiring, so drying out the crawl space helps the rooms you live in.
How much does a crawl space vapor barrier cost in Fort Worth?
Installed crawl space encapsulation, with the floor, walls and vents sealed, usually costs about $3 to $10 per square foot across the US. That's the market's range for a full closed job, not our price, and a liner on the ground alone is less work and usually costs less. Your own figure comes from the estimate, once I've measured the space and seen what has to be fixed first.
How do I deal with standing water before a crawl space vapor barrier goes in?
Clear it out and fix where it's coming from first, so it stays gone once the liner is down. It usually comes from a leaking pipe above or groundwater getting in from outside or under the floor. If it's a plumbing or drainage job, I'll tell you so, and we lay the liner once that's sorted out.

Moisture can be a problem in other parts of the house too, and a barrier in the right spot keeps damp air away from wood and drywall.
Attic air sealing
When the upstairs runs hot or drafty even after the crawl space is sorted out, sealing gaps around lights, pipes and the attic hatch stops the air leaking out.
