Is it worth insulating my basement in Fort Worth?

Basement insulation in Fort Worth, TX lines the inside of your basement walls so the space stays warmer when it's cold and drier through humid summers, and the rooms right above it often feel warmer too.

Most people who call about a basement tell me the floors upstairs stay cold, the basement smells damp or the power bill keeps climbing. What moves the price is how much wall there is, whether drywall is already up, which material the walls can take and whether any water has to be fixed before we start. The schedule mostly turns on that water repair and on how much finished wall has to come down, and your own price comes from the estimate when I come out to look. If part of your house sits over a crawl space instead, crawl space insulation is its own job, and I can look at both on the same visit.

How we do basement insulation

Water comes first. I go over the walls for damp spots, stains, cracks and a musty smell, and if anything is wet or leaking we have it fixed before any insulation goes on, because insulation over a wet wall just hides the problem and holds the water against it. Once the walls are dry, our crew seals the gaps around pipes, wires and the rim joist, the wood band sitting on top of the foundation wall, so the new insulation isn't fighting a draft. Then we insulate the walls with a material that handles moisture and clean up before we leave. I'll walk you through what we found, so you know your basement a little better than when we arrived.

On bare concrete I usually reach for closed-cell foam insulation, the dense kind that blocks moisture as well as air. It costs more than boards or batts, and I still think it's worth it against a basement wall because it seals and insulates in one pass. Open-cell foam insulation is lighter and softer, so it suits walls and rooflines above ground better than concrete that can pick up damp.

What Fort Worth ground means for basement insulation

Basements aren't common in Fort Worth, and the ground is a big reason. A soil summary for the city finds that shrink-swell clay, soil that swells when it's wet and shrinks when it dries, limits houses without basements on 42% of the mapped land inside city limits, while a shallow water table limits basements on under 1% of it. For your job, that means water rising from below is rarely what's behind a damp wall, so when I find damp I look first at how rain reaches the wall and at cracks where the clay has pushed and pulled over the years.

We're based in Fort Worth and do the same work in many of the cities around it, including Haltom City and North Richland Hills. Basements are just as rare there, so each one gets the same slow look at the walls before we talk about material.

Why call us for basement insulation

  • I give the estimate myself

I come out to look at your basement and give the estimate myself, then I run the work alongside our install crew. The person who saw your damp corner is the same one making sure it got handled.

  • Cracks and damp checked first

Fort Worth clay moves with the rain, so I check the wall cracks and seams before anything gets priced. That way you hear about a problem before you've paid to cover it up.

  • In business since 2020

I started this business in 2020 after learning the trade on a Fort Worth crew. Six years in, I'd still rather tell you to fix a leak first than sell you insulation that won't help.

  • Fully licensed and insured

We're fully licensed and insured. That matters when a crew is working inside your house with spray rigs and ladders.

Frequently asked questions

Should I insulate the basement walls or the ceiling?

In most houses you insulate the walls, which is what federal guidance generally favors over the basement ceiling. Even a basement without its own heating or cooling is more connected to the rooms above it than to the outside, so the walls are where the heat gets out.

What is the best way to insulate damp basement walls?

Fix the damp first, then use closed-cell spray foam, which federal research found gives the best moisture control of any insulation for the inside of basement walls. Fiberglass or cellulose placed against the wall can soak up moisture and stay damp, which is why we don't put them against bare concrete.

How do I get my basement ready for insulation?

Get any leak or damp wall fixed first, because building guidance calls for checking the foundation wall and solving water problems before the insulation work starts. It's also worth asking whether your yard slopes away from the house, since the same guidance calls for regrading ground that doesn't. I check both when I come out, and the insulation follows once the water is handled.

How much does basement insulation cost in Fort Worth?

There's no single figure for basement walls, but a mid-range insulation project in Fort Worth with blown-in cellulose, air sealing and crawl space encapsulation usually costs about $3,000 to $4,000 per job. That's a different job from a basement, so read it as a sense of the local market, not our price. Your basement price comes from the estimate, once I've seen the walls.

Does spray foam in a basement have to be covered?

Yes, federal building research says spray foam must be covered with ignition-barrier paint or drywall. When you compare quotes for a spray foam basement, check that the covering is part of the job, because the foam isn't finished without it.

Can I use foam boards to insulate basement walls?

Yes, rigid foam boards can insulate the inside of basement walls, and they control moisture when every panel sits fully against the wall with no air gaps and every edge and seam is tightly sealed. That's hard to get right on rough or uneven concrete, which is one reason I lean toward spray foam on those walls.

  • Closed-cell foam insulation

Dense spray foam that blocks moisture and air in the same layer, a good fit for concrete walls, rim joists and spots where damp is a real worry.

  • Open-cell foam insulation

A lighter, softer foam for above-ground walls and rooflines, worth a look if the rooms over your basement or the attic need attention too.
