Closed-cell foam insulation in Fort Worth TX - an attic sealed against air and moisture

Hot upstairs rooms and a climbing power bill often start in the attic. Closed-cell foam under the roof deck seals and insulates in one layer.

Is closed-cell spray foam worth it in my Fort Worth attic?

Closed-cell foam insulation is a dense spray foam that slows heat and blocks moisture in one layer. In Fort Worth it's usually worth paying for under the roof deck or on the rim joists, the boards around the edge of your floor frame.

Most calls I get start with a hot upstairs, a room over the garage that never feels right, or a power bill that keeps going up. If the old insulation up there is wet or full of droppings, insulation removal comes first, because new foam won't fix a problem it's sprayed next to. The price moves with how much roof deck or rim joist we're covering, how thick the foam needs to be, how easy the attic is to work in and what has to be repaired beforehand. The schedule turns on that prep and on which days your household can be away. You get your own number at the estimate. We're based in Fort Worth and work in many of the cities around it.

How we install closed-cell foam insulation

I start by going through your attic for roof leaks, stained or wet wood, gaps around pipes and the hatch, and where the ductwork runs, because foam sprayed over a leak or damp wood just hides the problem. If the roof needs work, I'll tell you to get that fixed first. Closed-cell costs more than open-cell, so I walk you through where its moisture control is worth paying for, like the roof deck or the rim joists, and where it isn't. We also go over how the attic will stay dry once it's sealed, so you know what keeps it that way. On install day our crew covers anything that's staying in the attic, sprays the foam to the thickness we agreed on, trims it where it needs to be clean and cleans up before you come home.

Closed-cell isn't the answer for every surface. In plenty of walls and attics, open-cell foam insulation handles the heat for less money, and I'll say so when that's your case. We bring the same prep-first approach to commercial insulation for property managers and business owners.

Closed-cell foam insulation in Fort Worth houses

A lot of the houses we see around Fort Worth have the air handler and ductwork up in the attic, and that's where closed-cell under the roof deck earns its price. Department of Energy building guidance says moving the insulation and air sealing to the underside of the roof deck has real advantages when the heating and cooling system lives up there, because the equipment ends up inside the cooled part of the house. The same guidance says any fuel-burning appliance in an attic sealed with foam, like a gas furnace or water heater, should be a direct-vent sealed-combustion type, one that takes its air from outside and vents back outdoors. I check what's in your attic before we price the job, so anything that doesn't fit gets sorted out before foam goes on.

Rim joists are the other place we use it most, on two-story houses and older homes with a crawl space, where those edge boards let outside air into the house. Closed-cell seals and insulates them in one step, and it needs less thickness than open-cell to stop air there. We see the same mix of houses on jobs in Haltom City and Mansfield.

Why call us for closed-cell foam

Frequently asked questions

What is the best way to insulate under the roof deck, closed-cell or open-cell foam?

Closed-cell is usually the better choice under a roof deck when you want moisture control as well as insulation, because it can serve as both the insulation and the vapor control layer, the layer that slows moisture moving through. Open-cell is vapor open, so it handles heat only. Closed-cell also repels water instead of soaking it up, and typical closed-cell foam gives about R-6 per inch, R-value being how well insulation slows heat.

How much does closed-cell foam insulation cost in Fort Worth compared to open-cell?

Closed-cell costs more installed than open-cell foam, so it's worth it only where you need its moisture control. If your ductwork isn't in the attic, sealing the gaps and topping up blown-in insulation usually does the job for less. I'll tell you which side your house falls on and give you your number after I've seen the attic.

Why do we have to leave the house during spray foam insulation?

You leave because the chemicals in spray foam can harm people while it's going in. EPA says exposure can cause asthma, sensitization, which is your body starting to react to it, lung damage and other breathing problems, plus skin and eye irritation. Plan it like a short trip, with kids, pets and everyone else out of the house while we spray.

How long does it take before we can move back in after spray foam?

Consumer Product Safety Commission staff advise everyone in the house to stay out for at least 24 hours. EPA's re-entry guidance adds that you come back only once the foam has finished curing and the house has been aired out and thoroughly cleaned. We'll pick the days with you at the estimate, so your time away is planned ahead.

Will spray foam insulation attract termites?

The spray foam industry's trade group says spray foam isn't known to attract or feed termites. It also says that in some cases a house with foam may need a closer termite inspection or more advanced inspection methods.

Does closed-cell spray foam need to be covered after it's installed?

It does when the product or the code calls for it, and not every foam does. Department of Energy guidance says to cover spray foam with a thermal or ignition barrier, such as a coating or drywall, in those cases. Ask which applies to the product going in your house, and I'll go over it at the estimate.

  • Open-cell foam insulation

A softer, lighter foam that slows heat and fills awkward framing well, and often the better buy for walls and attics where moisture control isn't the main concern.

  • Commercial insulation

For offices, shops and rental buildings, where property managers need foam and sealing planned around tenants and the building checked for problems before anything is sprayed.
